What is Oral Stops?

Oral stops are stops sounds produced when airflow is completely obstructed and then released through the oral tract.

Here are the 6 oral stop sounds in English:

Voiceless:

/p/- voiceless bilabial plosive ( e.g pop /pɒp/, /map /mæp/)

/t/- voiceless alveolar plosive ( e.g guilt /gɪlt/, target /'tɑːɡət/)

/k/-voiceless velar plosive ( e.g  kite /kaɪt/, week /wiːk/)

Voiced:

/b/- voiced bilabial plosive ( e.g bag /bæg/, build /bɪld/)

/d/- voiced alveolar plosive ( e.g deed /di:d/, head /hed/)

g/- voiced velar plosive ( e.g pig /pɪg/, big /big/)

What Is Nasal Sounds?

Nasal sounds are stop sounds that are created when there is a compleate obstruction to the airflow in the oral cavity, unlike other stops, nasal speech sounds are created when an obstruction in the oral cavity remains. The sound is the produced when air is released through the nasal cavity.

Here are the 3 nasal stops in English:

/m/-Voiced bilabial nasal (e.g mum /mʌm/,mine /maɪn/,summer/'sʌmər/)

/n/ Voiced labiodental nasal, (e.g noon /nu:n, funny /'fʌni/, can /kæn/)

/ŋ/ Voiced velar nasal, (e.g sing /siŋ/, think /θɪŋk/,bring /brɪŋ/)
